Sensex up 117 points on short-covering, firm global cues

Extending its rising streak for the fourth straight session, the benchmark BSE Sensex was trading up by nearly 120 points on the back of a firming trend overseas amid covering-up of short positions by speculators ahead of monthly expiry in the derivatives segment tomorrow.

At 11.15 a.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was trading higher by 117.25 points or 0.42 per cent at 27,819.04 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was trading up by 29.9 points or 0.36 per cent at 8,353.90.

Among BSE sectoral indices, banking index was up 0.75 per cent, followed by India infrastructure 0.63 per cent, auto 0.58 per cent and FMCG 0.57 per cent, while metal, oil & gas, consumer durables and realty stocks lost investors' support and were down 0.77 per cent, 0.34 per cent, 0.13 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively.

Bharti Airtel (2.03%), Bajaj Auto (1.69%), HDFC (1.52%), Axis Bank (1.37%) and M&M (1.19%) were the major Sensex gainers, while the top five losers were SSLT (1.52%), Hindalco (1.38%), Coal India (1.06%), Wipro (0.86%) and Tata Powre (0.77%).

A holiday lull settled over Asian markets on Tuesday after Wall Street closed at historic highs, while oil prices suffered a stinging setback after Saudi Arabia quashed all thought of curbing supply.
Equity investors chose to focus on the benefits that falling fuel prices would have for consumer spending power.
Trading was light in Asia with Japanese markets shut for a holiday. Australian stocks ran into profit-taking after three sessions of sharp gains and dipped 0.5 per cent.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.2 per cent, though markets in Singapore and Taiwan both inched ahead.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was up by 0.29 per cent in early trade, while Japan’s financial markets will remain closed today for a public holiday.
On Wall Street, the S&P 500 had put on 0.38 per cent to score an all-time closing high on Monday, while the Dow added 0.87 per cent and the Nasdaq 0.34 per cent.
