Following global cues, benchmark indices, the Nifty and the Sensex, opened with a gap down on Wednesday.
The Nifty opened at 5,328, down 30 points over its previous close of 5,358. The Sensex opened at 17,553, down 44 points over its previous close of 17,597.
At 9.41 a.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was down 71.79 points or 0.41 per cent at 17,525.63 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was down 22.1 points or 0.41 per cent at 5,336.40.
US markets had closed in the red on Tuesday after the US Fed did not announce the widely anticipated economic stimulus.
Volatility was up two per cent and the India Vix was at 20.44.
All the indices on the NSE were in the red. BSE small cap index was the only exception on the BSE which was marginally in the green.
