Kingfisher employees withdraw 8 pm deadline to Mallya for salaries

Employees of the cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines have withdrawn a threat to strike if they are not paid salaries due to them by 8 pm tonight.

The deadline was set by employees in writing yesterday to Kingfisher owner Vijay Mallya.

In their "appeal" to Mr Mallya, the employees, pilots included, had said yesterday that they were not in a mental condition to undertake their duties and that could "jeopardize the safety of our aircraft." They said, "KFA employees have come to a point where operations have become unsafe due to stress caused by our financial constraints."

Earlier, Mr Mallya had said that salaries for all junior staff would be cleared by April 4. Pilots and engineers who were owed money would be compensated by April 9 and 10, he had said. But pilots had said they wanted salaries for December and January paid by 8 pm tonight.

Five Kingfisher flights were cancelled yesterday.
