BSNL, MTNL to Operate Secure ‘Govt’ Network

The Centre has decided to let stateowned telcos BSNL and MTNL operate and maintain the secure telecom network that is being built to connect all government departments, according to an internal telecom department document reviewed by ET. The earlier plan involved letting security agencies man this . 600-crore network that is being built to maintain confidentiality in communication between different arms of the government — both at the state level and in the centre — over policy formulation. Now, BSNL and MTNL will be asked to run this secure network on a non-commercial basis with direct funding from the centre, the department’s internal note adds.
Close to 5,000 government ministries and offices are set to be connected to this network. It must also be noted that all government ministries and agencies will continue to use their existing tie-ups with telecom companies and will switch to the secure system only for sending sensitive information and during emer
gencies. Besides, this network will not overlap with any of the existing telecom infrastructure or have any points of interconnection with any private operator. All equipment for this network is being sourced from state-owned telecom research agency C-DoT
